Blue Mountains - Victoria Falls

10.10.10 Sleepout for Homeless

Hey folks
This isn't strictly photography related, but it's still a good cause and worth publicising. On 10th October I'm joining hundreds of others and sleeping out in Centennial Park to raise money for Mission Australia who help thousands of homeless people every night.
I was shocked to learn that each night there are over 100,000 people sleeping rough in Sydney and almost half of these are under 25.

Royal National Park

I have to confess, this is one part of Sydney that I haven't really photographed at all. Perhaps because I live on the Northern perimeter and this is on the Southern Perimeter... However after checking out some of the images and beautiful landscapes in this photo guide I think I'm going to have to make a greater effort to get down there.

Glebe Tram Sheds

It is my pleasure to add this wonderful guide to a pretty unique place - the old tram sheds at Glebe near Harold Park Raceway. This is the location where I shot my image called "Nightmare". It's a fun but freaky place to shoot. I would be very careful if you are shooting there at night, make sure you go with a group.

Lithgow Blast Furnace

This is one of my favorite "ruins" to shoot. This photoguide is from David Haworth who has contributed a number of guides to this project (thanks David).

The blast furnace is a really cool place to shoot... lots of interesting shapes, angles, backgrounds etc. It really is one of those "must see" locations in my view. Also makes for some interesting night photography (but I wouldn't shoot this place alone at night).

Canyon X (also known as Warriewood Blowhole)

Hi folks... It's been a few months since the last photo guide was put up, so I thought it was about time to add another batch. I'll try to add a few over this long weekend.

I have finally written the guide to Warriewood Blowhole... a place that I nicknamed "Canyon X" when I stumbled across it a while back. This is one of Sydney's relatively unphotographed locations mainly because of the access to it.

You can get to it by scrambling over rocks from North Turimetta, or else you can take the exciting route down the fishermans ropes from the cliff. I definitely prefer the rope descent.

Anyway, this location is NOT for the faint of heart, but there are some great rewards to those that do get down the bottom. I hope you enjoy my guide to Canyon X.

Devils Cauldron by Brent Pearson

Here's a guide to one of my favorite Northern Beaches locations (probably in my top 3). It is located about 20 min South of Whale Beach (along the rocks) and I have nick-named it "Devils Cauldron". When you see it in action you will see why I called it this.

A fantastic place to photograph... very dramatic. This is not a location for beginners to Seascape photography as there is a 20 min scramble over the rocks. It is also near an exposed rock shelf, so you need to be very careful of waves out here.

Well worth the effort to get to. I hope you enjoy my guide to Devils Cauldron.

Long Reef

Well it seems that the wet weather we are having is keeping a lot of the landscapers out from shooting this weekend.... so what better way is there to pass the time than writing a couple of guides. The Skillion by Ilya Genkin

The Skillion was a very strange and beautiful place that we used to run up and roll down as kids. Stockton Beach by Brent Pearson

Ruined Castle in the Blue Mountains by Darren Pearce

Fingal Head - Northern NSW

I shot this location last year with a fellow Flickr-ite called Garry. It was a fantastic place.... You have to really look at some of the photos of the rocks at this location to believe them.

If you are stuck into holidaying with the family in Surfers Paradise, I highly recommend this little diversion for the avid landscape photographer

Bangalley Headland Site Now Added

It is my pleasure to announce a new photo guide for Bangalley Headland. What excites me about this photo guide is that it is the first one that is written by somebody else. They managed to work out how to use my documentation and create their own guide.

I have had the pleasure of shooting with Tim Donnelly on a number of occasions, you can check out his Flickr site here. Tim is a real devotee of the dawn seascapes. He recently took me on an outing to this remote location that he discovered and I had a most enjoyable morning shooting on this remote rock ledge. I would urge readers to pay heed to Tim's warnings though, I saw him walking along the rock ledge in pre-dawn light and he stepped into a hole that submerged him up to his waist!!!

So check out the Photo Guide to Bangalley Headland, near North Narrabeen on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

Ivo Rowe Pool in Coogee Now Added

I just wrote up a guide for a much more obscure coastal location. It's probably the lesser known of Coogee's 4 pools. The Ivo Rowe Pool in South Coogee.

Great for those interested in more minimalist seascape photography or night photography.

3 Northern Beaches Guides Released

Here are the first three guides that I have produced. Probably 3 of my favorite local beach locations;

Turimetta - A photography Mecca with incredible rock formations
North Narrabeen Tidal Pool - A gorgeous pool with a unique walkway
Mona Vale Pool - Another really uniqe pool that turns into an island at high tide

Please visit these guides, leave your comments and tell me what you think. I have tried to incorporate every bit of information that I think a photographer would ever need to know about a new location.

Created Network Structure

I have established the three tier hierarchy for this project now.

At the lowest level you have the individual postings themselves. At this point in time I have written 4 (Turimetta, Mona Vale, North Narrabeen pool & Forresters Beach)

These role up through a State Level site (in this case it's this site... Australia-NSW).

The states role up to a Country Level site (here's the link to the Australian site)

And the Australian site allows you to navigate up the global site http://freephotoguides.blogspot.com

I have started spreading word of this project in a limited manner to see if I can get some other photographers to start writing guides for it. I would like to hammer out all the kinks before taking the project out to the wider world.
